[K Story] Experience Media Art Combining Human Intelligence (HI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a Theater
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Se-young = Can human intelligence (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI) create new artistic expressions through media art? This topic has already been explored numerous times in various experimental videos and media facades for large buildings.
The “2025 HI vs. AI Film Festival,” which opened on the 24th at the Picturehouse Theater in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, is the first AI media art event to be held in a commercial theater.
The film festival aims to serve as a venue for experimentation, providing a glimpse into the future of art through these experiments. It demonstrated how technological advancements can expand the realm of artistic expression and how works that embody human emotion can be integrated with AI.
Director Han Ji-woong, who planned the exhibition, said, “K-pop first became known to international fans through music videos, and Korean directors have also won awards in international film festivals for AI art. I believe that media art and AI art are key elements that can help Korea lead the global art and video markets.” He added, “If we move beyond the traditional painting-centered art market and focus on fostering digital media art and AI art, I believe Korean media art can become a global standard for media art.”
This year’s film festival featured leading Korean painters and media artists, including Jang Seung-hyo, Lee Lee-nam, Hong Purume, Ryu Ho-yeol, Kim Bo-seul, and Kim Kyung-eun, as well as AI-based creators.
In addition, AI-based film content will be screened during the festival.
The AI film screenings include director Jung Eun-wook’s “Naya Moonhee” (produced by MCA, 2024), which recently opened in theaters, director Kwon Han-seul’s “One More Pumpkin,” which won the Grand Prize at the Dubai AI International Film Festival, and AI films produced by his studio, Studiofreewillusion, including “POEM OF DOOM” (2024), “TALES UNTOLD” (2024), “Beyond Time” (2025), and “Martyr in the Wilderness” (2025). Screenings will run until the 30th.
